Assessment is a vital part of school life. We constantly assess our children in a variety of ways to ensure all children have opportunities to make good progress.
Statutory Assessment and Testing
Below is a brief outline of the statutory assessment arrangements. Additional information will be sent to parents / carers where appropriate. Parents / carers will be informed in writing of your child’s results from any statutory assessments before the end of the school year.
Early Years Foundation Stage
Children are first assessed during their time in our Nursery and/or Reception. They are assessed against the 7 Areas of Learning and Development through the completion of the Foundation Stage Profile. Each child has an individual profile which is a collection of their work, experiences and achievements throughout the Foundation Stage. This is used to inform Teacher Assessment including wheter or not they have achieved the Early Learning Goals or not.
Key Stage One
There is a statutory Phonics Screening Check at the end of Year One. This seeks to assess the children’s ability to use synthetic phonics to help them read real and invented words. The outcome helps to determine whether or not the children have reached the expected level in reading. The Phonics Screening Check takes place in June.
The End of Key Stage One assessments (sometimes referred to as the Year Two SATs) take place in May for Year Two children. Children sit nationally prepared tests for reading, GPS (grammar punctuation and spelling) mathematics and science. These are marked within school and help inform the teacher assessments in these subjects. A teacher assessment is also made for writing using evidence from the children’s written work.
The local authority regularly moderates the teacher assessments made by the school to ensure their accuracy.
Key Stage Two
The End of Key Stage Two assessments (sometimes referred to as the Year Six SATs) take place in May for Year Six children. Children sit nationally prepared tests for reading, GPS (grammar punctuation and spelling) and mathematics. These are sent to external examiners to be marked and the results are returned to school (usually towards the start of July). Teachers also use a range of evidence to make Teacher Assessments for writing.
The local authority regularly moderates the writing teacher assessments made by the school to ensure their accuracy.
